Spring is almost here! To celebrate the approaching flowers and sunshine, I’m starting a Spring Book Series! In the upcoming weeks, I will feature one of my favorite springtime books and a coordinating activity or snack. What a fun way to kick off the spring season!
First up, It All Starts With A Seed by Emily Bone, ages 6+ for $14.99. This is a unique book that my family has really enjoyed! The book starts off with basic info on a seed’s journey and finishes with that little seed turning into food! The book covers a variety of seeds even including examples of greenhouse tomatoes, rice, tropical fruits and edible seeds.
We start out with the story of those hard worker bees and how they contribute to nature. Fruits including tree, bush and vine varieties are covered next. Leafy, crunchy and munchy greens have their own spread as well.
Root vegetables and varieties of nuts are the next focus. The book goes into detail about various nuts, how and where they grow, and when the time is right for digging up these gems!
The story of flour, bread, pasta, cakes, and pies…are also included. Information incudes how the process begins with a seed being planted and then branches off into different aspects of seed on it’s adventure of becoming more!
Chocolate trees and mushrooms were by far my daughter’s favorite pages! Chocolate is followed from a seed all the way to the delectable, sweet treat that we all love. The secret life of mushrooms(as we now call it) was oddly fascinating. 😂 We’re all mushroom lovers here so it was fun to see the different types of mushrooms out there.
This interesting book finishes up with a discussion of which seeds you can eat. I must say, we had such a fun time with this book!
We decided to add in a springtime seed craft to go along with all of our new seed knowledge! We created this cute watermelon plant pot.
Here’s all you need to make one:
Terra cotta pot
Black, red and green paints
Paintbrushes
First, my daughter painted the bottom of the pot red to represent the edible portion of the watermelon. While that was drying, she added a circle of green around the top ring of the plant pot. You could also take a lighter green and add “watermelon stripes” if you like. Finally, she painted the “seeds” to complete her creation. I think it turned out adorable! It was so easy, we might even try to paint a pineapple pot next time.
